The Safe Way To Make Homemade Biodiesel
Homemade Biodiesel recipes and “How To Make Biodiesel” guides are becoming increasingly common. Biodiesel offers a clean burning, cheaper alternative to traditional fossil-based fuel and is produced from renewable resources with very little environmental impact.
It is also easy to use, bio-degradable, not toxic, and contains no polluting sulfur or lead additives. It is therefore relatively easy to see why information on how to make Biodiesel has become so popular.
All homemade Biodiesel recipes include the generic steps of heating vegetable oil; creating a solution of methanol, lye and Sodium Methoxide; and mixing them altogether. These recipes require toxic chemicals – some of which are considered to be very dangerous. For example, methanol is absorbed through skin tissue and can cause blindness or even death. Sodium hydroxide cause severe third degree burns.
When making homemade Biodiesel, you will be wise to follow some simple, yet effective, safety tips. For example, always wear proper protective gear such as gloves, an apron, and eye protection. Make sure they are chemical and fire proof. Don’t use plastic gloves that can dissolve when they come into contact with some chemicals. Wear a shirt with cuffs for additional protection while making homemade Biodiesel. To ensure full protection, cover as much of your skin as possible. So, don’t wear shorts or sandals!
In addition to protective clothing, careful thought should also be given to the area where you work. Ensure there is a good draft flowing through your work space. Before making homemade Biodiesel allow for sufficient ventilated so that the fumes can easily escape. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) does offer some protection from methanol vapors. Don’t allow young children or pets to get too close to the filtering drums.
All “How To Make Biodiesel” guides suggest making homemade Biodiesel on cool days. This is because methanol produces its most toxic fumes when it is warm. At a standard room-temperature it is relatively safe to work with.
Always keep chemical containers at arm’s length when opening the lid. This is because the compound may expand, explode, spill or splash.
Finally, be sure to always have running water available while handling methanol and sodium hydroxide. This may be necessary to flush these chemicals out of your eyes or other exposed areas.
Heading the advice presented in this article should mitigate the risks associated with producing homemade Biodiesel. That said, we don’t assume responsibility for any injuries or damage to property when following this “How To Make Biodiesel” guide.
Learn About Global Warming Causes
It is time to learn about what we can do for the world. Every creature (plants, humans and animals) that exists hangs in the balance.
Have you noticed the increase in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere? Have you noticed the natural disasters that have been happening all over the globe? It is a fact that we are in the midst of the effects of global warming. Thus, we need to know the global warming causes for us to be able to understand and eventually make a difference by doing our part to minimize its effects.
There are many influences why global warming is happening. One of the major contributors for it is the greenhouse gases emitted by humans. Do you know that most of them come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars and electricity? The sad thing about it is there is a direct correlation to human population and the increase in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. We make use of the natural resources, we pollute the world, we use vehicles that emit harmful gases, and we make use of electricity. Without knowing, we have been contributing to it and by knowing, we can do something about it.
Since we are one of the major global warming causes and the evidence that point to us is strong, we should do what we can make a difference. A perfect example is Earth Hour wherein people are encouraged to turn-off the electricity for an hour. Small things such as these matters in the long run. Other ways to help are the following: planting more trees, using our vehicles less and spreading the word about global warming. By doing these, we become the solution and not the cause of the problem.
The Features And Prices Of Popular Biodiesel Kits
A Biodiesel kit offers an easy alternative for those wanting to produce homemade Biodiesel. Why Bio-diesel? It is clean burning, clean to produce and with low sulfur content.
It is therefore considered as an environmentally friendly fuel and can assist in reducing global warming. It’s also significantly cheaper than traditional fossil fuels such as petroleum or diesel. Why a Biodiesel kit? The major reason for buying a bio-diesel kit is safety. For example, all Biodiesel kits have what is called a “sealed system processor”. This prevents those toxic fumes from escaping during the production process.
A Biodiesel kit allows you to produce homemade Biodiesel by converting vegetable oil into an environmentally-friendly fuel which can be used to power any diesel engine. The kits are portable and can be set-up pretty much anywhere. As you are making inflammable fuel, it is probably best to set the kit up outside your house, in a shed or under an overhang.
If you live on a farm or a large acreage this may not be as important as the kit can be located farther from the house. Of course if you can afford it go ahead and get the more expensive closed system just because they are very easy to use.
There are many different suppliers of Biodiesel kits. The best known brands include:
* Home Biodiesel Kits (priced from $2,795) * Florida Biodiesel B-60 (priced from $1,295) * Evolution Biodiesel Mega-Ester (priced from $2,875) * Fuel Meister (priced from $2,995) * Home Biodiesel 83 gallon (priced from $2,995) * Green World Blofuels Ester Machine (priced from $6,450) * Biodiesel 123 Model 6016-1 (priced from $3,499)
As you can see there is a huge price differential. The cheapest is $1,295 (Florida Biodiesel’s B-60), and the most expensive is Green World Blofuels Ester Machine at almost $6,500.
In general, the more features included, the more expensive the kit. The more expensive models have inbuilt features to prevent fumes being released during the refining process. This feature is important if you plan on using the kit near your home in a residential area. Another common feature in the better models is a facility for oil prefiltering and steel plumbing. Many of the more basic models do not have heating, washing or drying systems. None of these models include a fuel nozzle and filter.
So as we can see, there are many options available for those wanting to make homemade Biodiesel, using a Biodiesel kit. As always, you get what you pay for. So be sure to check out the features before you buy.
The Inconvenient Facts About Global Warming
It is hard to believe that even in this time of extreme environmental conditions and changing weather patterns, the facts about global warming is still being disputed. This is also true about climate change facts.
When one understands just how the different global warming facts impact on our lives, we can start to comprehend our role in preventing further damage from occurring. We can understand storm effects such as El Nino and La Nino and the havoc they have on our environment.
As responsible individuals and citizens of planet earth, we have a pressing responsibility to communicate the true facts about global warming to all. Never underestimate the difference an individual can make. Al Gore and his Nobel Prize winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth is testament to this.
So, what are these Climate Change Facts we need to communicate:
Fact 1 When the planet Earth was created almost 4 Billion years ago, its atmosphere contained less than 1% oxygen. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was as low as 190 parts per million during the last Ice Age, about 21,000 years ago.
Fact 2 Plants, via photosynthesis, convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, eventually reaching 21% of the atmosphere. Animals operate in the opposite way than plants: they take up oxygen, burn organic matter (food), and release carbon dioxide as a byproduct
Fact 3 About 75% of the annual increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is due to the burning of fossil fuels.
Fact 4 In 2007, it is estimated that there are over 800 Million Motor Vehicles on Earth. Motor vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, and scooters) account for 80% of all transport-related energy use.
Fact 5 1998 was the warmest year on record. For the next 3 years, each year was second only to 1998. Then in 2005, the pattern broke – it equaled 1998.
Fact 6 Changes in land use occur when forests are converted from wild agricultural plantations to rangelands. And then from rangelands to farmed agricultural land, and then finally to urban areas. And other patterns of land degradation - such as deforestation, overgrazing, overcultivation, desertification and salinization – reduce the net uptake of carbon dioxide, increasing global warming.
Fact 7 Forests in 3rd world countries are destroyed for timber, excess trees which are not needed are then burned, causing tons of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. The resulting smoke and embers from this wasteful practice takes carbon levels in the air to a higher level. These carbon molecules interact with other chemicals in the air to produce a greenhouse effect.
Understanding these global warming facts gives us a path out of this predicament. They provide us with an approach to change the way that we live our lives and thereby can save the planet.
